I just couldn’t get into this game. I liked some of the plot, a few of the characters, and a bit of the music. But without a definitive main character I could never really invest myself. I feel like if we had a protagonist we truly followed from start to end I would have appreciated it more. It’s still one of my favorites of the series, but I think it’s the main reason why I rate it lower than all the PSX games, and rate it about evenly with FFX.
That opening felt quite epic to me but I was dissapointed right after that. I wanted to spend more time in the first town and explore the caves hunting for frozen espers. Instead I got a journey across the world with constant party splitting and every character has the ability to spam magic so nobody felt too unique. The second half of the game I really enjoyed because it felt like a plot twist and I liked ressurecting the world and collecting party members.
Wouldn’t call it the peak of gaming, but it is absolutely a game worth its reputation and acclaim. I played and beat it for the first time in 2013 so I had no nostalgia clouding my judgement, and i adored it. It’s a genuinely special game. Ironically that’s what I loved about it. Because it had so many characters with stories independent of each other, it made the world feel more real. Like a living breathing place and not just a backdrop to the MC and his story.
